Harvard Medical School Founded
One of the most prestigious medical colleges in the country was founded more than 200 years ago today, and doors opened two months later. Harvard Medical School was founded in 1782 as the Medical Institution of Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass. At that time, students only attended classes for one or two semesters before taking an apprenticeship. The students purchased tickets for the lectures, rather than pay tuition. In 1869, Charles William Eliot became president and began transforming Harvard into the respected medical institution it is today.
