Good nutrition should start well in advance of surgery. Eat a well balanced diet following the principles of the new U.S. Department of Agriculture
MyPlate. For those on a special diet, such as low salt for congestive heart failure, stick with your assigned nutrition program. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein and adequate nutrients will help boost the reserves needed for your immune system, and will allow you to recover more rapidly.
Good sources of protein include beans, milk, eggs, dairy foods, seeds, nuts, grains and soy; vitamins are abundant in peppers, broccoli and citrus fruits. Taking a multivitamin supplement may make sense for people who can't or don't eat a balanced diet.
People in good physical condition are also more likely to recover quickly from surgery. Stay active with regular exercise. Individuals in good shape for surgery may be better able to fight infection, heal faster and have the strength to get back to their regular routines sooner. Any moderate aerobic activity, such as walking, bicycling, swimming or running, can help better prepare your body for surgery.
