2) Is the sleep aid valerian (400 mg) addictive? - Source:Michael Fischer, M.D., M.S.
Valerian is an herbal remedy often used to help people sleep. Herbal medications are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration in the way prescription medications are. Valerian has not been studied in the same way prescription drugs are, and how iot may work is not well understood. In addition, the exact amount of valerian in a given dose may vary widely, since herbal medications are not held to the same standards as prescription medications.

9) How soon should herbal and alternative medicines be discontinued prior to surgery? - Source:Harold J. DeMonaco, M.S.
I usually advise people to stop taking these products at least two weeks prior to a procedure. The timing depends a good deal on the products being taken, however. It is also important to advise your health care professional about use of supplements after surgery or after other procedures.

20) News Review From Harvard Medical School -- Study: Saw Palmetto Doesn't Aid Prostate - Source:A Perspective From The Harvard Medical School
The herbal supplement saw palmetto works no better than a placebo for treating an enlarged prostate, according to a study published February 9 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers had experts pick the purest commercially produced saw palmetto supplement and randomly assigned half of a group of 225 men to take the pills, the New York Times News Service reported. The other half took a placebo. After a year, the news service reported, the two groups had no difference in symptoms, urine flow, prostate size, quality of life or blood levels of prostate-specific antigen, which can reflect prostate size.
