The normal platelet count is 150,000 - 400,000 platelets per microliter of blood. Platelets are needed to help blood clot when we have a cut or get injured. A platelet count of 100,000 or greater is very safe. You could even undergo any type of surgery with your platelet count.

Sometimes platelet counts temporarily fall when a person has a viral infection. And many times, it happens without any identified reason. So, the first step would be to repeat the test. If your red blood cell and white blood cell counts are normal, there is no rush to get this done.

If it is still low, you and your doctor should consider why that might be the case. Potential causes include:

  • Decreased platelet production by the bone marrow
  • Shorter platelet life because platelets are being attacked by your own immune system
  • A drug reaction
  • A large spleen that is trapping the platelets

Most often platelet counts like yours don’t need any treatment. The count just needs to be periodically repeated.
