People with chronic hepatitis should eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.

In general, this includes:

  • Plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Lean protein
  • A modest amount of healthy fat, such as olive oil and other plant based fats

Avoid all alcohol. It can make liver damage worse.

Recent studies suggest that people with advanced liver disease, such as cirrhosis, may benefit from drinking two to three cups of coffee per day. Experts don’t know why. The association between the two is just for coffee. So, it is unlikely to be related to caffeine.

With certain types of liver disease, your doctor may have more specific dietary recommendations.
