A skin rash can have many possible causes. So during an outbreak, it is best to be evaluated by your doctor. He or she will ask if there are any other symptoms such as itching, pain, irritation and burning. Or if you have a history of other skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, herpes or yeast infections.

Other important factors to think about include the use of pads, soaps, and synthetic clothing. These might cause a contact dermatitis. Your doctor might also ask if you have had exposure to a new sexual partner.

Your doctor will examine you to determine if the rash is in just one area, or if it spreads to other parts of your body. Your doctor will note the characteristics of the rash (color, bumpy or smooth, dry or oozing).

If your doctor suspects an infection, he or she may collect cultures. A skin biopsy may be necessary to make a diagnosis, but that’s rare.

Treatment will depend on an accurate diagnosis. So make an appointment during the time in your cycle you expect the rash to be present.
