A daily teaspoon of Metamucil, along with at least 8 ounces of water, is perfectly safe.
Metamucil is “psyllium,” a fiber supplement. This kind of fiber is “soluble,” meaning it can mix smoothly with water. When it mixes with water it creates a soft gel. Psyllium and other soluble fibers add bulk and soft texture to your stool. This improves constipation because it is easier to pass a large, soft stool than to pass a small, hard stool.
If you do not drink some extra water or another beverage with Metamucil, the powdery fiber can glob together a bit. You can think of it like concrete that is not adequately moistened. This is obviously not helpful for easing constipation. So make sure you get plenty of fluids if you are using a fiber supplement.
