For 20 years, the husband and wife biochemistry research team of Carl and Gerty Cori studied how sugar in the body is converted to glycogen. The Coris first worked together in 1923, publishing a report on the roles of adrenaline and insulin in the conversion of liver glycogen to glucose. Finally, in the early 1940s, they were able to identify the role of enzymes in the creation of glucose. As a result of their extensive research, the Coris went on to produce synthetic glycogen. The Coris were the first husband and wife team in the United States to win a joint Nobel Prize, which they received on this date in 1947. They shared the medical prize with Argentine physiologist Bernard Houssay.
