Albert Schweitzer, humanitarian, medical missionary, philosopher, author, musician and theologian, died on this date in 1965 in what is now Gabon, Africa. He was 90. With a doctorate in philosophy and a medical degree, Schweitzer and his wife set sail for Africa in 1913 to establish a hospital in the town where he eventually died. In an isolated site, Schweitzer practiced medicine under grueling, primitive conditions - treating 2,000 people in the first nine months. Schweitzer won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. He used the prize money to found a leper colony next to his hospital.
