The first eye bank opened on this date in 1944 at New York Hospital. Its founders were Dr. Richard Townley Paton of Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and Dr. John McLean of New York Hospital. The eye bank was a joint effort of these two hospitals and 19 other hospitals in the New York area, which also cooperated in obtaining and sending eyes to the bank.
