The Less Fortunate On this date in 1848, a resolution was approved that allocated funds for the first school for the mentally retarded. The Massachusetts School for the Idiotic and Feeble-Minded Youth admitted its first students in October. The school was later renamed the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded and today is known as the Walter E. Fernald State School, named after the school’s first superintendent.
