Confederate Angel Juliet Ann Opie Hopkins was born on this date in 1818. Little is known of her early life, but she was widowed young and moved to Alabama with her second husband. In 1861, when the Alabama legislature established the office of hospital agent, Hopkins became the superintendent. She secured buildings for the hospitals and supervised their daily operations. Hopkins also went into the field to rescue wounded soldiers, getting wounded herself at the battle of Seven Pines. Hopkins died in 1890 and was given a military burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
