Dentist Of The Seas The U.S. Navy offers educational opportunities in numerous fields, including medicine, law, nursing and dentistry. This sea-based branch of the U.S. Armed Services created its medical department in 1842, but its first tooth doctor didn’t come on board until March of 1913. That’s when Harry Edward Harvey was assigned to the hospital ship U.S.S. Solace. And a month later, on April 27, the first naval dentist assigned to an overseas base, James L. Brown, was ordered to the U.S. Naval Station in Guam.
