On this date in 1786, Bishop William White established the first dispensary to distribute free medicine to the poor. This dispensary, located in Philadelphia, was chartered on April 15, 1796, under the direction of 12 managers, who were elected annually. In 1922, the dispensary became affiliated with Pennsylvania Hospital, which was known for doing free outpatient work.
