Recent History Of Blood Transfusion On this date in 1930, Russian physician Sergei Yudin first transfused cadaver blood into a living patient. Transfusions of blood and blood products, obtained either from a donor or a blood bank, are quite common today. But it took discovering human blood types and antibodies before the procedure could become safe and then widely practiced. This occurred at the turn of the 20th century, when the ABO blood group system was first identified.
