UC’s First Med School

The first graduating class of the University of California was the Class of 1873, the same year the University organized its first medical school. On Feb. 20, 1873, the UC affiliated with cash-strapped Toland Medical College in San Francisco and the newly created California College of Pharmacy. Toland Medical College was founded by Hugh H. Toland, who served as the college’s professor of surgery from its founding in 1864 until his death in 1880. Since then, the University of California at San Francisco has added a College of Dentistry, a School of Nursing and a psychiatric institute. Today, UCSF’s School of Medicine graduates about 140 physicians each year.
