A:

Your husband should be eating a balanced diet. This includes:

  • Lean protein (fish, poultry, extra lean meat)
  • Healthy fats (olive oil, canola oil, nuts, nut butters)
  • Healthy carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, beans)

Refined starches (such as white bread, white rice, crackers, etc.) act like sugars in the body: they raise blood glucose rapidly. Instead, take in whole grains (100% whole grain bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, barley, etc.) in place of refined starches.

You should also limit the overall amount of carbs you take in to help prevent diabetes.
