Sanitorium For The "Morally Flawed" On this date in 1935, the nation's first sanatorium for drug addicts received its first patients. The United States Narcotics Farm was located on 11 acres in Lexington, Kentucky. It wasn't until the 20th Century that the medical community came to a consensus on defining drug addiction as a disease, though the belief remained that addicts were "morally flawed." Dr. Lawrence Kolb, the first director of the U.S. Narcotics Farm and a leading drug addiction researcher at the time, concluded that people who choose to become addicts have a psychopathic personality and may have a predilection toward crime.
