State Vet School On this date in 1879, the first public veterinarian school in the United States was established. The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University was the first veterinary school to offer a four-year program and require high school and college courses as prerequisites. The College has since built one of the world’s most respected veterinary diagnostic laboratories. Iowa State says that it graduates more veterinarians working with large animals than any other U.S. vet school.
