First Honored Doc On this date in 1858, the U.S. Congress authorized that a gold medal be presented to Dr. Frederick Henry Rose of the British Navy, the first doctor to ever receive such an honor. When yellow fever broke out on the U.S.S. Susquehanna while in Jamaica, Dr. Rose offered his services and sailed to New York with the stricken crew. The gold medal was awarded to Dr. Rose “for kindness and humanity to officers and crew of the U.S.S. Susquehanna.”
