La Femme Osteopath Little is written about the first female osteopath, Jenette Hubbard Bolles, who received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree on this date in 1894. Bolles and two other women graduated from the American School of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri, which was organized by the founder of osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still. Still believed that manipulating bones and muscles, sometimes in combination with standard medical treatments, could correct problems within the body. Still named his system of medicine osteopathy, after the Greek “osteon," meaning bone.
