Launch Of JAMA On this date in 1883, the first issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association was published. Nathan S. Davis, M.D., a major proponent for medical education and the driving force behind the creation of the American Medical Association 36 years earlier, took the reigns as the publication's first editor. The first issue ran 32 pages. Today, the journal publishes about 90 pages of editorial content four times a month to an audience of 750,000 readers in 148 countries. It is published in 12 languages.
