In 323 BC, Alexander the Great died mysteriously after partaking in a celebration and consuming large amounts of food and alcohol in Babylon. Over the years, biographers and doctors have offered various theories regarding the cause of his death, attributing it to poison, pancreatitis, malaria and, most recently, typhoid fever. After being stolen in transit to Macedonia, Alexander's embalmed body was displayed in a glass sarcophagus in Alexandria for over five centuries before its whereabouts became unknown. He is believed to have died on this date at the age of 33.
