Killer Flu

In Boston on this date in 1918, the first case of the second U.S. wave of deadly Spanish influenza occurred. The first wave happened in March, but went largely unnoticed. The second and third waves killed almost 800,000 Americans in 10 months. The disease spread around the world after World War I, killing 1% of the world's population (more than were killed in the war). It was the worst epidemic to occur since the bubonic plague of the 14th century. In the United States, Congress earmarked $1 million for the Public Health Service to hire doctors and help set up infirmaries, though no treatments were effective.
