I am 55 years old and had a hysterectomy at age 40. I have taken Estrace (1 tablet every other day) for the past 15 years. My doctor told me I should slow down on it but I feel better when I take it. What is a normal dosage for me and when should I stop taking it?

A:

Estrace is the brand name for the drug estradiol. It is a commonly used form of estrogen for women that:

  • Have premature menopause (menstrual periods stop before age 40)
  • Undergo a complete hysterectomy (removal of the ovaries and uterus) prior to natural menopause
  • Have menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness

Estrace is available in 3 doses:

  • 0.5 mg
  • 1 mg
  • 2 mg

Your doctor’s advice is typical of what I and most other doctors recommend today. Until now, taking estrogen was appropriate for you.

It sounds like your Estrace dose is already pretty low since you take it every other day. That’s good. At this time, you should try to lower your dose if you can. Your goal is to find the lowest dose of Estrace to control menopausal symptoms. And then try to slowly decrease the dose until you can stop.
