It can be very upsetting to find out that you have a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Keep in mind, however, that you got the infection from someone you know, and you can pass it on to others if you don't get proper treatment.
- Notify all of your sexual partners immediately, so they can get treated.
- Get tested for HIV and all other STDs. If you have one STD you may have others.
- Follow your doctor's treatment advice, taking the full course of antibiotics. If your doctor advises it, get follow-up testing.
- Avoid all sexual activity while you are undergoing treatment. Wait seven days after you are treated for an STD before resuming sexual activity. If you have an incurable STD (genital warts, genital ulcers or HIV) talk to your doctor about how to avoid infecting your partner(s).
