Symptoms To Report to Your Doctor

People with diabetes benefit from staying in close contact with their doctors. During check-ups, it is important to report any new symptoms that you are having.

The following symptoms can be a sign of an emergency. If you have any of them, contact your doctor right away.

Your risk

If you have a very high blood sugar (more than 400 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl)
You are at high risk of dehydration. You may require intravenous fluids if your sugar is not lowered soon.

A sugar this high may be a sign of infection if your diabetes is usually in better control.
If you frequently have low sugar, with or without these typical symptoms:
  • Trembling
  • Sweating
  • Anxiety
  • Blurred vision
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Weakness
  • Headache
You probably need an adjustment in your medicine dose.

Episodes of low blood sugar can be dangerous, so contact your doctor now. Don't wait until your next scheduled appointment to discuss this with your doctor.
If you have a fever higher than 101 degrees
You should be evaluated in case you have a serious infection.
If you have:
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Arm or neck tingling or numbness
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
These can be symptoms of a heart attack.

Call for emergency help.
If you have:
  • Confusion
  • Speech difficulty
  • Weakness on one side
  • Difficulty walking
  • Dimming, blurring, or loss of vision
  • An unusual or severe headache
These can be symptoms of a stroke.

Call for emergency help.
