Viruses And Asthma

Viral respiratory infections can result in severe and prolonged asthma attacks. In fact, viral respiratory infections, such as colds and the flu, are the most common cause of attacks that last more than a few hours.

By preventing these infections, you can avoid these attacks. Influenza and other flu-like illnesses can increase and prolong attacks. Since the viruses that cause these illnesses are often passed from person to person, avoiding sick people is the obvious first step.

Other ways to avoid virus-caused asthma attacks include:

  • Clean your hands frequently to prevent spreading viruses. Use soap and water or alcohol-based products. Also, keep your hands away from your mouth and eyes.
  • Avoid sharing glasses, cups, eating utensils and towels used by those who are sick.
  • Maintain good nutrition, manage stress and get enough sleep to preserve your immunity against viruses.
  • Get an annual flu vaccine to reduce your risk of catching influenza.
