Sobering Data On Student DWI Habits
March 4, 2003

(Canadian Medical Association Journal) -- In the March 4 issue of CMAJ, Dr. Edward Adlaf and colleagues present data from the 2001 Ontario Student Drug Use Survey, which indicate that 31.9% of 1846 Ontario students surveyed admitted to being a passenger in a car driven by a drunk driver in 2001.

In addition to the high incidence of students from grades 7 to 13 who admitted to this, 15% of students with driver's licences (grades 10-13) reported driving while under the influence of alcohol and 20% admitted to driving after using cannabis.

The authors state that these findings are "of great concern," given that alcohol-related motor vehicle collisions are a major source of injury among adolescents.
