Society For Women Doctors When the American Medical Association was founded in 1846, it barred women from its membership, furthering the discrimination being practiced against women by members of the medical profession. The first womens medical society was organized two years later, however. On this date in 1848, six women joined as founding members of the Female Medical Educational Society of Boston. Members agreed "to provide and promote the education of midwives, nurses and female physicians, and to diffuse among women
the principles and means of preserving and restoring health." That same year, in the same city, the first women's medical school opened. The New England Female Medical College, the predecessor of the Boston University School of Medicine, celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1998.
