Sociologist and Educator Kenneth Bancroft Clark, psychologist and educator, in partnership with Gunnar Myrdal, researched the role of the African-American in the United States that resulted in "An American Dilemma," published in 1941. Clark then began teaching at City University in New York and founded the Northside Center for Child Development, which offered a program for emotionally disturbed children, especially those troubled by the conditions of growing up in the ghetto. His report on the detrimental psychological effects of racial segregation in schools on both white and black children, was a basis for the 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown vs. Board of Education, that outlawed segregation. Clark, born on this date in 1914, was the first black member of the New York State Board of Regents.
