Champion Of Children

As a young man in Germany, Abraham Jacobi, M.D., spent a brief time in prison because of his participation in the Revolution of 1848. After his escape in 1853, he emigrated to New York City where he established his medical practice, devoting himself to the care of the poor, particularly children. Soon he became a recognized authority on the diseases of children and was named a lecturer at the College of Physicians and Surgeons and, eventually, a professor of pediatrics. He authored a number of textbooks including "Contributions to Midwifery and Diseases of Women and Children." He also founded the American Journal of Obstetrics. He died on July 10, 1919.
