Medicare Cardholders Since 1966

President Lyndon Johnson presented the first Medicare card to former President Harry S. Truman on this date in 1966. President Truman ceremoniously received his card at the Truman Library in Independence, Mo., and the second card was given to Truman’s wife, Bess. In 1965, Johnson signed the Medicare bill at the Truman Library, an event Truman described as “a profound personal experience for me.” During his presidency, Truman had tried to get a national health insurance program passed by an unreceptive Congress.
