O2 Be A Scientist

Alchemy, the medieval theory that base metals could be chemically changed into gold, was widely accepted until Antoine Laurent Lavoisier disproved the theory in the 18th century. Born on this date in 1743, Lavoisier single-handedly ushered in the science of modern chemistry by disproving the long-accepted notion that water could be changed into wood. Lavoisier also performed controlled experiments of air, expanding the work of Joseph Priestly by confirming the element of oxygen and giving it its name. In addition, the French chemist identified 32 other chemical elements, which he called principes. While Lavoisier's theories were accepted enthusiastically, he fell victim to Robespierre's Reign of Terror politics and was charged with treason and beheaded in 1794.
