Nip and Tuck

Harold Delf Gillies is not a household name, but he put the facelift on the map of modern medical practice. Gillies developed plastic surgery as a recognized field of medicine and, in 1918, became the first physician to specialize in the field. He was born in New Zealand in 1882, but studied and lived in England until his death this week (June 17) in 1960. When World War II broke out, Gillies was one of only four qualified plastic surgeons practicing in England. In 1946, he was named the first president of the Association of Plastic Surgeons. "Often while lifting a face I have a feeling of guilt that I am merely making money," Gillies was quoted as saying. "Yet," he added, "is it not justified if it brings even a little extra happiness to a soul who needs it?"
