Native Activist

Susan La Flesche Picotte, who was the daughter of Joseph "Iron Eye" La Flesche, an Omaha tribe chief, graduated at the top of her class from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1889. After an internship at the Woman's Hospital in Philadelphia, she became a doctor for the government school at her home reservation and then went on to treat all the members of her tribe, traveling great distances by horseback. La Flesche Picotte carried on her father's work by lobbying for laws to control the sale of alcohol on reservations. When the town of Walthill was founded on the Omaha reservation, La Flesche Picotte led a delegation to Washington to obtain the stipulation that every future deed on the property would prohibit the sale of liquor. She was born on this date in 1865 and died in 1915.
