The First American Pharmacy College On this date in 1821, 68 apothecaries met at Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia to establish better scientific standards and provide better training for apothecary students and apprentices. A year later, the students officially started the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first such college in the United States. Originally confined to men, women were eventually admitted to the college in 1876. Now called the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, the college offers degrees in health psychology, biomedical writing, science teaching, cell biology and biotechnology as well as undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in pharmacology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and pharmacy administration.
