July 2, 2009DENVER (The New York Times News Service) -- A national coalition of liberal faith groups are pushing for "affordable health care for all families" through a radio ad campaign this week in five states.
The Rev. Bill Calhoun of Denver's Montview Presbyterian Church is the voice in the Colorado radio ad, which, like the others, "reminds lawmakers that the status quo on health care is not who we are as a nation" and that America can do better.
The ad campaign began Tuesday and will run through July 4 in Colorado, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska and North Carolina. Ads urge senators from those states to support reform that makes quality coverage affordable for every American family.
The lobbying effort involves the Oakland, Calif.-based PICO National Network, Chicago-based Gamaliel Foundation, and the Washington-based groups Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, Faithful America, Sojourners and Faith in Public Life.
The groups say more than 600 clergy from 39 denominations in 41 states have committed to engage with their congregations in the national debate on health care.
