Answered questions from the past 2 years:
.
My son is a picky eater. He’s a little underweight for his age, and also allergic to milk. He likes hot dogs, so I buy him the 98% fat-free turkey dogs. My husband thinks he should get regular hot dogs because he is a still a young child with no health problems — and he needs the fat for energy. He also thinks he doesn’t need fiber. What should my son be eating?
.
I know that there is a health benefit to eating “healthy fats” like olive oil. But I’ve heard that these are only unsaturated fats when raw; when you cook them, they become saturated fats. Is there any truth to this?
.
I’m at a steady healthy weight, but do use a lot of sugar in my hot tea. I usually drink from 2-4 cups a day, with 2 teaspoons of sugar per cup. Other than possible weight gain, are there any other drawbacks?
.
I’ve heard a lot lately about probiotics and a healthy bowel. Should I be taking probiotics — or is it in the foods I eat? If not, is taking these in pill form safe?
.
I have had black stools, and some weight loss. Could this signal a problem?
.
I have been working with a nutritionist over the last couple years to improve my health. Under her guidance, I replaced romaine lettuce with raw, darker green vegetables like kale, collard greens and broccoli. Can a person eat too many dark green vegetables?
.
My son is 4'7' and weighs 83 pounds. His predicted height is 5'5'. We are a vegetarian family who eat eggs, dairy and soy. Could this affect his growth negatively?
.
I’ve heard that cooking vegetables makes them lose most of their vitamins and minerals. Is this true?
.
I eat fairly well, but I don’t take any vitamins or supplements. Should I be?
.
I am 57 years old. I’ve had intermittent bouts of diarrhea and sharp cramps in my stomach for the last 3 weeks. Normally it happens in the middle of the night, and after eating a higher-fat meal. What might cause this?
