| Diapers
The number of diapers that you need will depend on your baby's habits; but as a general rule of thumb, pack one diaper for every one or two hours that you will be away. If you are using cloth diapers, pack one or two extra diaper covers (and pins, if necessary). |
| Pre-Moistened Wipes
Use pre-moistened wipes to clean your baby during diaper changes or after eating and other messes. These wipes come in a small travel case that can be refilled. Otherwise, carry a few damp washcloths in a plastic bag or plastic container. |
| Diaper Rash Ointment
Diaper rash can worsen if you are away from home and unable to change your baby's diaper as frequently as usual. |
| Plastic Bags
These are vital for disposing of soiled diapers and holding wet or dirty clothes until you return home. |
| Changing Mat (Or Diaper-Changing Pad)
Although many public restrooms are equipped with diaper-changing tables (or pull-down stations), these mats come in handy when you need to change your baby on another surface, such as the floor. Some diaper bags come with matching quilted pads; they also are sold separately. |
| Burp Cloths
Pack extra burp cloths for catching drool or spit-up. |
| Change Of Clothing
You may want to include an extra undershirt ("onesie") and outfit in case your baby soils his clothing. |
| Feeding Supplies
Babies eat frequently. If you are going out for more than an hour or so, pack everything you will need to feed your baby.
• If you are breast-feeding, pack a water bottle, snack, and extra nursing pads for yourself.
• If you are giving your baby a bottle with expressed breast milk or formula that has already been prepared, pack the bottle in an insulated container with an ice pack.
• If you are using powdered formula, pack a bottle with water and a separate container with the correct amount of powder to be mixed when ready to use.
• Once your baby starts eating solid foods, remember to pack his food, plus an unbreakable serving dish, feeding utensils and bibs. |
| Blanket
A light blanket can be used to cover your baby in drafty rooms, to set your baby on, or to drape over mom's shoulder for discreet breast-feeding. |
| Sweater Or Jacket
These may be helpful in cool weather and air-conditioned rooms. |
| Extra Pacifier
If your baby uses a pacifier, you may want to carry an extra one, in case his gets lost. |
| Small Toys Or Books
When your baby gets older, you will want to pack some things to keep her amused. Remember to choose quiet toys for those times when you do not want your baby to disturb others around you.
