Help Them Help You

Your friends and family won't necessarily know what to do. They have no training in this. Tell them what you need. Be specific. If they know what you expect from them, they'll have a clear path to take, with clear goals.

Give them ideas about what types of encouragement you find useful. Perhaps you just want them to be a sounding board for those moments when you are on the edge. Or maybe you would like them to check in each morning and follow your progress. Give them "job descriptions" that define their roles in your smoking cessation journey.

One Idea

As their first assignment, ask your support team to build you a survival kit for days when you're really struggling. It can include chewing gum, lollipops, bottled water — anything that you can use to make quitting seem less painful. And tell them to keep their calendars clear so you can rely on their help during the quitting process.
