The Importance of Support

Your family and friends can play a valuable role in your new life as a nonsmoker. Research has shown that encouragement from loved ones is extremely helpful for successful smoking cessation.

So don't be shy about asking for help. You don't have to do this alone.

Involve your friends and family every step of the way. They will be your biggest cheerleaders, your best watchdogs, your tower of support. Let them know your quit date as soon as you choose it. Recruit them to help you stay busy and keep your mind off of smoking.

If you know any former smokers, ask them to be part of your endeavor. Former smokers know what you're facing and can commiserate with your quit day experience. They can provide extra insight, having been there themselves.

Try to enlist as many people as you can to be part of your support team. The more people who know you are quitting, the more difficult it will be for you to "cheat." Write down the names and numbers of your support team, and keep this list posted by your phone. If you start to reach for a cigarette, reach for the phone instead, and call a member of your support team.
