A Smoke-Free Day Is A Good Day

Quitting is going to be an ongoing struggle for a while, and you may slip at times. Commend yourself every day that you are able to resist the lure of cigarettes. If you stay tobacco-free from the moment you wake up until your head hits the pillow, give yourself kudos. Every smoke-free day is a good day.

The longer you go without smoking the more likely you are to experience these health rewards:

  • Ability to fully taste food
  • Improved sense of smell
  • Less coughing
  • More energy
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Decreased risk of heart disease
  • Reduced risk of cancer
  • Longer life

In addition to these health benefits, you won't reek of cigarettes anymore. Then there are the emotional rewards, too: the satisfaction, pride and sense of accomplishment. So think of some personal way to honor every day that you remain smoke-free. It can be something small, like putting a gold star on a calendar. Or something bigger, such as filling your home with fresh flowers. Do whatever reflects your pride in this major accomplishment.

Positive reinforcement is one way to keep you on the right course.

Another way is to learn to accept compliments from people. Realize that what you have achieved is to be commended. Others recognize your efforts, and you should, too.
