The Right Prescription A preliminary meeting to discuss the formation of a professional pharmaceutical organization was held in October 1851 at the New York College of Pharmacy. Just a year later, on Oct. 6, 1852, the American Pharmaceutical Association was officially formed in Philadelphia. Daniel Smith was elected the first president, and William Procter, Jr., was elected corresponding secretary. The first annual meeting of the association was held in August 1853 in Boston. Today, the American Pharmaceutical Association has more than 50,000 members, including pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians.
