The Lancet Finds Its Voice

The prestigious Lancet, a British medical journal, was first published on this date in 1823. The journal is named for a short, wide surgical knife with a double-edged blade that physicians often use to make punctures and small incisions. Thomas Wakley was the founder and first editor of the Lancet. Published today each week, the Lancet was first intended as a place where physicians could report on hospital lectures in and around London, as well as important medical cases of the day. The Lancet occupies an important place among medical journals worldwide, and has played a crucial role in English medical and hospital reform movements.
