A:

Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are different. Anyone can refer to himself or herself as a "nutritionist." It is not a professionally regulated term.

Registered Dietitian, however, is professionally regulated and requires a license or credential. A registered dietitian must have a bachelor's degree, complete a dietetic internship, pass a national registration examination and maintain registration status by completing continuing education requirements to ensure ongoing competency.
