October 26, 2004 (The Associated Press) -- Some tips for talking to friends about eating disorders, from the National Eating Disorders Association:
-Set a time to talk at a private and relaxed place away from distractions.
-Talk in a calm and caring way about specific things you have seen or felt that worry you. Tell them you believe these things may indicate there could be a problem requiring professional attention.
-Ask your friend to explore these concerns with a counselor, doctor, nutritionist or other health professional knowledgeable about eating issues. Help your friend make an appointment or accompany him or her on the first visit, if you feel comfortable.
-Avoid a battle of the wills. Avoid placing shame, blame or guilt on your friend. Express your support.
