When Carroll Leevy was an intern and resident at the Jersey City Medical Center, he became interested in researching alcoholic liver disease because of the huge number of cases he treated. In 1948, he established the first clinic for alcoholic liver disease at the medical center and began investigating the mechanisms of the disease. He and a group of researchers found that alcoholic liver disease is due to an immunologic reaction to a breakdown product of alcohol. Leevy also helped develop a technique to evaluate the liver's ability to repair itself by evaluating the effectiveness of different drugs in treating the disease. Leevy was born on this date in 1920 and received his degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1944.
