Jan. 22, 2003

Variola major — This is the classic, most common form of smallpox. Symptoms begin with fever and develop into a distinctive, disfiguring rash. The historic fatality rate is about 30 percent.

Variola minor — This is one of the two main forms of smallpox. It develops in the same way as variola major, but takes a milder course. The historic fatality rate is less than 1 percent.

Hemorrhagic smallpox (rare) — The rash is accompanied by bleeding into the mucous membranes and the skin. It is almost always fatal.

Malignant smallpox (rare) — The bumps do not develop into pustules but remain soft and flat and grow slowly until they merge with one another. It is almost always fatal.
