October 28, 2002 WASHINGTON (HHS) -- HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced $8.8 million in grants to support infrastructure development and interventions to prevent the use of Ecstasy and other club drugs, methamphetamine and inhalants.
"These grants will help us protect our youth from the dangers of Ecstasy and other club drugs, methamphetamine and inhalants," Secretary Thompson said. "Use of these drugs can lead not only to addiction, but to unintended pregnancies, rape, HIV infection and other communicable diseases. Young people need to learn the dangers and protect themselves by not using these harmful substances that can change their lives in an instant."
Awards were made in two groups -- 13 awards to organizations to develop prevention infrastructure and 14 awards to organizations to focus on prevention interventions. A list of the awards follows. The grants are part of the prevention programs of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
SAMHSA Administrator Charles Curie noted: "These are substances that attract our youngest and most vulnerable. We are expanding proven prevention programs to keep as many adolescents as possible away from club drugs, methamphetamine and inhalants. Youngsters do not believe that they will become addicted or die, but every day we hear of young people who do. These programs will inform teenagers that Ecstasy and other club drugs, methamphetamine and inhalants are extremely harmful."
